2006: Bellport High School Football

The program was founded by Suffolk Sports Hall of Famer Joe Cipp Jr. in 1976 and went on to success in parts of five decades that continue today. One of the most dominant teams on the south shore of Long Island and in Suffolk County, the Clippers were honored with a special recognition induction into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. They are the first high school program in the region to receive this honor.

Cipp retired as the winningest head coach in Suffolk County history, an honor that has since been passed. Bellport has won 13 Division II Suffolk County titles between 1982 and 2022 (this post was updated in 2024). They have also won six Long Island championships since 1990, when that playoff round was created.

Individual honors have been plentiful for Bellport as well. The program has graduated four Hansen Award winners, which is designated to the top player in the county, including Ed Gowins (2006), Antonio O’Ferral (1990), Tom Watson (1982) and Rodney Cooke (1980).
