Catherine “Cathy” Vayianos’s career in sports started at St. Michael’s Regional High School in Canada. Upon graduation, she attended Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey where she played both softball and basketball.

After graduating in 1961, Cathy became a physical education teacher for one year at Hewlet High School in Hewlet, New York.

Next, she moved on to teach physical education at Lindenhurst High School from 1962-1965. Vayianos also began her coaching career in tennis here.

Cathy’s true accomplishments were at Half Hollow Hills East High School from 1966-2003 where she taught physical education and was a coach for multiple sports. These sports included Girls’ Varsity Tennis, Girls’ Varsity Basketball, Girls’ Varsity Softball, Girls’ Varsity Volleyball, and Boys’ JV Tennis. Additionally, she served as the Building Coordinator for Physical Education and Athletics and the advisor of the Girls’ Leaders Club.

As a tennis coach, Vayianos has a record of 417 wins and 66 losses from 1974-2003. 175 of these wins were consecutive from 1999-2000. She has also won 21 League Titles (11 consecutive) and 12 County Titles (10 consecutive). Her other accomplishments both as a coach and in her career are as follows:

Even while serving as a coach and teacher at Half Hollow Hills East, Cathy also made time for other jobs and passions in her life. These included serving as the Girls’ Tennis Head Coach at State University of New York at Farmingdale from 1971-1972, Girls’ Basketball Assistant Coach at Adelphi University in 1972, and earned her Master’s Degree in School Administration from Long Island University, C.W. Post Center in 1978. Vayianos also served Suffolk County Athletics in many positions. These are as follows:

Currently, Cathy is retired and resides in Florida.
