The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame has installed its sixth historical marker, honoring the Cuban Giants, who made history in 1885 in Babylon, New York.
The first all-Black professional baseball team in American history, the Cuban Giants, were also the first paid professional team, formed by staffers from the iconic Argyle Hotel to entertain guests. They went on to barnstorm for the next 30 years.
“We are proud to preserve and celebrate their legacy in American history,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame. “Our marker serves as a reference of education and inspiration for all those who stop by the lake today. Long Island continues to be a beacon of historical significance in our great nation.”
