The Bay Shore native was one of the longest-serving officials in Section XI history. He finished 48 years of officiating in 2022 and is well-known and highly rated in football and baseball. Grady was named New York State Umpire of the Year in 2001. He has officiated in the NYSPHSAA State Tournament several times and in various Long Island Championships. Grady served as vice president of the Western Suffolk Baseball Umpires Association and acquired the duties of President for 14 years. Joe was granted the honor of refereeing 13 times at the Section XI Football Championships and eight times at the Long Island Football Championship games. He was on the executive board of the official associations for several sports in Suffolk County for five decades. At Bay Shore, he was named Most Outstanding Athlete in 1962. He was inducted into the NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame in 2013.
