Carl Hansen was born and raised in New Jersey. He attended Syracuse University, where he played football and lacrosse and captained the lacrosse team to a National Championship. He also boxed at Syracuse.

Hired by Westhampton Beach School District in 1929 as a physical education teacher and the school’s first football coach.  At the time, Westhampton Beach was the smallest HS in NYS to play football.

Coached every sport at Westhampton and was the principal and Athletic Director.

The 1932 Football team went undefeated and was named “Suffolk County Champs.”

Considered to be one of the founding fathers of Section XI Athletics.

Most notably in the modern era, Suffolk County’s Top Football Award is known as the “The Hansen Award,” and here’s a fun fact: Westhampton Beach is the only school to win the award three years in a row.
