Joe Donnelly
Induction Year: 2023
Location: Huntington
Category: Journalism, Baseball and Officials
Initially, a general assignment reporter at the World-Telegram & Sun, Joseph T. Donnelly became a regular baseball writer for Newsday after writing for Sport Magazine and covering the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Senators for U.P.I. He joined Newsday in 1962 and spent most of the following 33 years covering the Yankees and Mets. In his “retirement,” he was Official Scorekeeper for the Mets and Yankees from 1996-2005 and Long Island Ducks from 2001-2010. He was a Softball Umpire for 33 years and was inducted into the Huntington Softball Hall of Fame in 2014. Joe Donnelly passed away recently at the age of 87. Still, his spirit lives on in his family and the many colleagues who showed their support for his induction tonight, including Tom Verducci, Peter Vecsey, Mark Herrmann, Bob Herzog, and so many others.
