Major League Soccer is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2020 and there have been two inductees of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame with connections to the league.
Alan Mayer, a former U.S. men’s national team goalie did not play in the MLS, but did coach. The 2002 Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame inductee from Islip, New York was an assistant coach with the Kansas City Wizards and Sporting KC Academy.
Mark Semioli, a product of Hauppauge, New York, was inducted to the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He played two seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy and five with the MetroStars (a franchise that eventually became the New York Red Bulls).
There have been a number of other Suffolk County natives to play MLS in recent years and we expect them to be submitted as potential candidates in the future. They would need to be accepted by the selection committee, of course.
