Heaton is a former MLB left-handed pitcher who played at Sachem High School and graduated in 1979.

He attended the University of Miami until 1981 when he was selected in the second round of the amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians.

Heaton played 11 years in the major leagues, and was also selected to the National League All-Star team in 1990 when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired in 1993.

Heaton continues to coach and manage for teams in Suffolk County.
