Centereach native Jamie Ortega is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of women’s collegiate lacrosse and one of the most accomplished student-athletes ever to compete at the University of North Carolina.

During her legendary career from 2018 to 2022, Ortega became the first player in program history to earn All-America honors five times, including four First-Team All-America selections.

She was also named National Freshman of the Year in 2018 and rewrote the record books at the university, conference and national levels.

Ortega finished her career with 466 points, the most in Atlantic Coast Conference history and the second-most in NCAA history. She remains North Carolina’s all-time leader in goals and points, ranks second in school history in assists, averaged an extraordinary five points per game, and produced the three highest single-season point totals in program history, including 113 points in 2022.

Her 334 career goals rank third in NCAA history and second in ACC history, and she started all 91 games of her collegiate career, the most starts and games played in program history.

Before her record-breaking college career, Ortega established herself as one of the most decorated players in Long Island lacrosse history at Centereach High School. She graduated as New York State’s all-time leading scorer with 588 career points, including 402 goals, and was ranked the nation’s No. 1 high school recruit by Inside Lacrosse.

Ortega was named the 2017 Long Island Player of the Year, earned U.S. Lacrosse All-America honors twice, was selected MVP of the Long Island Championship, and led Centereach to the first New York State championship game appearance in school history.
