Henry Read was the winningest football coach in Suffolk County history (176) until 2000 when his record was finally broken.

From 1967 to 1972, Read won 27 straight games. Additionally, he won 157 games with four undefeated teams. In his coaching career, he won eleven Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Football Championships.

Additionally, he served as the athletic director at Seton Hall High School in Patchogue from 1940 to 1974. He was also a coach, gym teacher and dean of students.

Throughout his career, Read won the following awards and honors:

  • Long Island Catholic High School Football Coach of the Year (Ten Times)
  • Long Island Private School Football Coach of the Year (Two Times)
  • New York Daily News Football All-Star Coach
  • Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Baseball Coach of the Year (Nine Times)
  • New York Daily News All Star Baseball Coach
  • Charter Member and First President of the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Conference

Henry Read passed away in 2001 at the age of 89.
