A standout student-athlete at Copiague High School, Steve Rebholz helped lead the Eagles to the 1982 league championship while earning All-League and All-Conference honors. He continued his outstanding basketball career at Farmingdale State College, where he played a key role in one of the greatest seasons in program history as the team posted a remarkable 30-3 record.
His success earned him a full Division I basketball scholarship to Hofstra University, where he became one of the program’s all-time leaders in field goal percentage and blocked shots. During his collegiate career, he was named MVP of the Hofstra Basketball Classic and received All-Conference honors.
Following his collegiate career, he was selected in the first round of the United States Basketball League Draft by the Long Island Surf and was also the top overall pick of the La Crosse Catbirds in the Continental Basketball Association Draft. He later earned an invitation to the NBA Rookie Camp with the Seattle SuperSonics.
Off the court, he dedicated 37 years to the Copiague School District as an educator while establishing himself as one of Suffolk County’s most respected high school basketball coaches. During his 26-year tenure as Copiague’s varsity boys basketball coach, he built one of the county’s premier programs, leading the Eagles to 10 league championships, three Suffolk County titles, one Long Island championship and the school’s first-ever New York State Final Four appearance in 2007.
He finished his coaching career with more than 300 victories, all at his alma mater, while mentoring six All-Long Island players. His coaching excellence was recognized with multiple League Coach of the Year honors and the Section XI Coach of the Year Award. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the game, he was inducted into both the Farmingdale State Athletic Hall of Fame and the Copiague High School Wall of Achievement.
