Sabatelle started out as a physical education teacher in Sachem in 1964.

He went on to serve 34 years in the district, in different capacities besides teaching, including coaching, officiating, assistant athletic director and acting director.

He was the Administrative Assistant for Physical Education, Athletics, Health Education & Health Services at  Sachem Central Schools from 1980-98.

After retiring from Sachem, he went on become the interim Athletic Director at several school districts, before fully retiring in 2007.

He also worked closely with Section XI over the years, serving on many committees as well as chairing over several of their sporting categories.
