Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame Unveils Historic Marker at Bridgehampton Race Circuit

Special day dedicating Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame Historical Marker No. 5 at the old Bridgehampton Race Circuit, now the home of The Bridge golf course, one of America’s most exclusive clubs.
Long Island has an incredibly rich racing history. The track operated from 1957 through 1999 and was home to major international series, from the World Sportscar Championship to NASCAR Grand National Races and Can-Am events. Legends like Mario Andretti, Paul Newman, and Richard Petty competed here.
The historical marker is in the middle of the golf course—Thunder Alley from its racing days—next to an original flag box and a pile of vintage tires. It’s just off the straightaway, a long stretch that leads to the preserved and restored start/finish line “bridge.”
Club owner Bob Rubin could not have been nicer during the process. He’s a racing enthusiast, and you can tell by the paraphernalia in the clubhouse and on the course that racing is still very much in the DNA of the landscape.
“As I’ve said, the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame is far more than an annual induction ceremony,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. “It’s important that we honor places of sporting significance so we never forget the immense history of our community.”
