Played at Seton Hall High and graduated in 1949. Murphy was seen by a Brooklyn Dodger scout that summer but declined the offer. However, he signed with the Dodgers in 1951.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952.

He again began spring training with the Dodgers in 1955, but left.

Shortly after Murphy entered New Paltz State Teachers College where he played baseball and basketball.
