Thomas Francis Murphy, 87, of East Patchogue passed away in 2019. “Red” graduated from Seton Hall High School (Patchogue) where he played baseball, basketball and football. After graduation and a tryout at Ebbets Field he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization, where-among other accomplishments in the minors-during one season he lead the league in stolen bases.
“Murph” was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. After his military service, he was selected for “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” while studying at SUNY New Paltz. Mr. Murphy enjoyed a long career as a teacher in the South Country School District, where he was instrumental in obtaining pay for the district’s sports coaches. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and was recognized by The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to “The Prestige of the Irish American Community on Long Island.”
Tom is survived by his children, Colleen and John Murphy, grandchildren Tia Marie, Samantha Rae, and Nicholas Murphy, great-grandson Kaden Dible, and many nieces and nephews. He is buried at Calverton National Cemetery.
