Joe Vignato excelled in sports throughout his entire career. Throughout his career at Patchogue High School, Savage Normal School in New York City, and even at a semi-professional level, he excelled in baseball, soccer, and track.
Coached basketball, track, cross country and soccer at Bayport H.S. from 1937 to 1968.
When he started his teaching career in 1935, Vignato handled the physical education for both boys and girls as well as all coaching in the school, which at the time had about 175 students. From 1937-1968, he coached basketball, track, cross country and soccer at Bayport High School.
Won many league and county championships, especially in cross country.
Vignato was regarded as a tough task-master, a demanding coach, and a strict disciplinarian. But he always seemed to bring out the best talents and sportsmanship in his team members. He instilled in them the desire to win. This attitude benefited the teams as they won many league and championships, especially the cross country teams. His astounding records are as follows:
