Induction Year: 2024

Location: Sag Harbor

Category: Baseball, Pro Sports, Resident

A longtime Sag Harbor resident, Keith Hernandez is one of the greatest New York Mets of all time and one of the greatest first basemen in the game’s history.

Hernandez was a five-time All-Star who shared the 1979 NL MVP award and won two World Series titles, one with the Cardinals and one with the Mets.

Hernandez batted over .300 seven times in his career and led the National League in runs scored (1979 & 1980), batting average (1979), doubles (1979), on-base percentage (1980), and walks (1986) during his career.

Since 1998, he has been a color commentator on the Mets television broadcasts. Alongside colleagues Ron Darling and Gary Cohen, he makes up arguably the best broadcast trio in all sports.

For his defensive work, he received 11 consecutive Gold Glove awards, the most by any first baseman in baseball history.

Keith also won the Silver Slugger Awards in 1980 and 1984 and the NL Batting title in 1979.

A former Mets captain, key leader, and veteran on the 1986 World Series championship team, Keith Hernandez played with heart and has become one of New York baseball’s most revered and adored figures.

The Mets retired his No. 17. He is an inductee of the Cardinals and Mets Hall of Fame and should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
