The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame and Team Up 4 Community recognized two distinguished student-leaders who have completed several community service projects based on volunteerism. Kate Gironda and Rowan Golub, both from Ward Melville High School, were honored at the annual Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame induction.
They were presented with plaques by Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, and Steve Webb, Founder of Team Up 4 Community. They were joined by Hall of Fame MC and News 12 anchor Kevin Maher for the photo-op as well.
This is another branch of service recognized by the Hall of Fame as it continues to evolve its mission and purpose, involving student-athletes and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
KATE GIRONDA, Ward Melville swimmer
In the spirit of selflessness, patriotism, and leadership, Kate Gironda exemplifies the values that define exceptional leadership both on and off the field.
As a key volunteer with the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation’s Champions of Valor Program, she dedicated herself to bringing the values of service, sacrifice, citizenship, and legacy to today’s youth. Inspired by 40 MLB players who put their careers on hold to serve in World War II, she helped carry forward their torch of honor. For 18 months, Kate committed two hours weekly to plan, organize, and promote the Foundation’s Run for Valor Race. Her leadership helped welcome 215 runners who came together not only to compete, but to honor our nation’s heroes.
Thanks to their participation and fundraising initiatives, they raised over $12,000. These funds were donated to provide emotional support and therapy dogs to veterans, as well as to support various VFW foundations. This race was more than just a community event; it was a living tribute to those who have served, a lesson in leadership, and a testament to what young people can accomplish when united for a cause greater than themselves. Kate’s passionate commitment to veteran support and youth leadership reveals how she’s transforming athletic excellence into meaningful community change, creating ripples of impact that extend far beyond any playing field.
ROWAN GOLUB, Ward Melville Baseball
In the spirit of dedication, mentorship, and historical preservation, Rowan Golub exemplifies the values that define exceptional leadership both on and off the field. As a dedicated volunteer at the Three Village Historical Society, he devoted himself to bringing local Revolutionary War history to life for visitors of all ages, sharing the legacy of the Culper Spy Ring, which was crucial to America’s fight for independence.
Over the past year, Rowan has committed more than 60 hours of service to his community, including conducting guided tours and connecting community members with their rich historical heritage. His passion for storytelling and history education has inspired countless visitors to appreciate the significant role their hometown played in shaping our nation.
Beyond preserving history, Rowan devoted himself to serving veterans, preparing and delivering meals to those who are homebound. His commitment extended to Operation Christmas Child, where he helped assemble donation boxes bringing joy to children across Africa and South America. At Emma S. Clark Library, he created resources for those in need, from stress balls to fleece blankets for animal shelters.
Through his commitment to history, service, and mentorship, Rowan demonstrates that excellence in athletics is merely one chapter in his ongoing story of community impact.
